The United Nations said in a press release that the report shows an upward trend in international destinations taking a more accurate, evidence-based and risk-based approach to coronavirus-related travel restrictions.

An increasing number of countries are requiring tourists to submit a negative PCR or COVID-19 antigen test and provide contact details to track arrival.

Just over 30% of all destinations globally have negative test results, which are the prerequisite for access, so the same percentage of testing is a secondary or tertiary metric.

So far, this approach has been followed by 70 global destinations with additional quarantine requirements. Nearly a third of these destinations are Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Americas.

According to the World Tourism Organization, many governments have advised their citizens to avoid non-essential external travel, including the governments of the 10 most popular travel destinations that have implemented such policies, which in March 2018 hosted 44% of all international tourists worldwide.
