Bollywood Filmmakers Haven't Attempted To Release Pan India Films: Ajay Devgn On South Vs North Cinema

NEW DELHI: Commenting on the growing popularity of Southern Bollywood-dominated films in northern India, superstar Ajay Devgn said on Monday that Pan India's promotional strategy was the reason for the success of non-Indian films.
When asked by the southern audience if northern films were still popular, Devgn replied: "No."
The 53-year-old actor and director, who recently starred in the Indian film RRR, said filmmakers from the south are keen to reach their audience beyond the language barrier of screen work.
“Kinos don’t come here (from the north).
“If anyone tries in the future, it will definitely be because their films are good and doing well here. Our films are doing well," Devgan told reporters here.
He spoke during the presentation of the second trailer for the next directorial film Runway 34, which he announced as a thriller. The event was also attended by Rakul Preet Singh, who played the title role in the film.
Inspired by a real-life event in 2015, the film revolves around Captain Vikrant Khanna (Devgan), a flying prodigy who embarks on a mysterious journey after taking off from an international destination.
When asked to choose between an actor and a director, Devgn said he loves both.
The actor-director, who also directed his own film Ajay Devgn Films, said he was not afraid of hard work.
He made his directorial debut with U Me Aur Hum in 2008 and continued with Shivaay in 2016.
“I love my job, I'm not afraid of it. When I start to imagine and visualize the film,” he said.
Devgn shared that the writers changed the film's title from "Mayday" to "Runway 34" to better understand the film.
“When there is an emergency, you call it Mayday,” he said.
“A reader actually asked me what May Day means. He asked me if the film was based on Labor Day, so I got a little scared,” he said.
Devgn also responded to reports that the film was canceled altogether, stating that it never happened.
“I really enjoyed listening to this story. I told the writers (Sandeep Kevlani and Aamil Kiyan Khan) that I wanted to make some changes to the script. After that, I was busy and the pandemic was gone. Producer. We were at home." The actor said the crew was trying to make a "real movie" and also enlisted the help of real pilots and ATC personnel for training.
“We have focused on the aviation industry. It was a difficult film. When you watch the movie, you will understand what the problem is for pilots, controllers and even passengers. How it works? he added.
Runway 34 also has megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
Although Devgn and Bachchan have worked together on films such as Major Saab, Hindustan Ki Kasam and Satyagraha, this is the first time he has directed his 79-year-old film icon.
Bachchan's host, Devgn, said it was an inspiring experience.

Singh, who plays co-pilot Tanya in Runway 34, said it was a great opportunity to work on the film for several reasons.

The 31-year-old actor starred alongside Devgn in the 2019 romantic comedy De Pyaar De and will be joining him in the upcoming comedy Tank God.
Singh said the film was shot on a real flight simulator and not on a film set.
“We filmed in a small booth with a lot of cameras, including a jimmy-jib. It was inspiring and exciting to create an atmosphere of fear, panic and tension… When I had a director like Ajay, it was easy to get in, sir,” he added.
Runway 34 also features Boman Irani, Angira Dhar, Aakanksha Singh and Carrie Minati.
