France Still Number One? Worlds Most Popular Travel Destinations

The Travel App That's Taking Asia By Storm - Klook Travel Blog

All eyes will be on France at the end of the year to see if it can retain its post-pandemic global tourism crown, according to a new study.

At StressFreeCar Rental.com, Vacation Car Rentals takes a look at some of the world's most popular travel destinations since 1996 with some interesting trends.

Do you enjoy visiting the Eiffel Tower and seeing his works?

Admire art at the Louvre or ski in the French Alps, the world seems to have an enduring love affair with France.

Comparing the country with the number of international visitors each year through 2019, France shows that it was the most popular travel destination for all but five of those 24 years. The United States briefly topped the rankings, ahead of France in 1996-1997 and 2013-16.

What's in the future?

A spokesperson for StressFreeCarRental.com said: "2020 is a critical year for the tourism industry, with international travel bans being relaxed in many countries as the Jovid pandemic eases.

“Millions of people will be traveling abroad this summer for the first time in two or three years and it will be interesting to see which.

Countries continue to attract the most tourists.

"At the end of 2022, will France still be the most popular tourist destination, or will other countries attract more people who want to travel and explore abroad?"

France have been in the top 2 destinations since 1996, and Turkey is now in the top 10.

The United States and France led the gap in most of the years between 1996 and 2019, except for recent years when Spain was second ahead of the United States in 2018 and 2019.

In the US and France, visitor numbers regularly exceed 70 meters - in recent years the total number of visitors from the third most popular country has doubled. In the two years since the Twin Towers attacks, visitor numbers have dropped significantly to 60 million in the United States and about 74 million in France, the widest gap between the two countries during the study period.

In 2018, America, then back in first place, recorded a staggering 96 million annual visitors – the highest number ever recorded by any country.

In 2019, France had a record 90 million international visitors in the top 3, Spain second, second with 83 million visitors and the United States third with 79 million visitors.

There is another interesting trend that has kept the six most popular trends largely unchanged over the last two decades. Italy, the UK and China are the most sought after travel destinations, along with France, the United States and Spain.

In 2003, Russia quickly overtook England to climb to sixth place, but have fallen far behind the top ten over the past decade.

The UK itself has slipped to ninth place in the top ten in 2019.

Canada, Poland, Germany and Mexico have been in the top ten for several years, while Turkey has climbed to sixth place in recent years.

Malaysia and Thailand have also entered the top ten in the last five years, and Ukraine entered the top ten in 2008 with 25 million visitors.

The number of visitors has also increased nationally. In 1996, 299 million people traveled to the top ten destinations. In 2019 it rose to 588 million. In 1995, only two countries recorded more than 60 million visitors - in 2019 there were five.
