5 More Destinations Upgraded To CDCs Highest Travel Risk Amid Increasing COVID Cases
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has moved more destinations to the highest risk category as the COVID situation worsens for American travelers.
On Monday, the CDC added five destinations to its Tier 3 "high" risk list, which includes countries with more than 100 COVID cases per 100,000 population in the past 28 days.
The states updated by the agency were Colombia, Iraq, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Paraguay. Previously, Kosovo was categorized as "low" risk Tier 1, while other locations have moved to "moderate" risk Tier 2.
Tier 3 is currently the highest risk category for travel, with the CDC reserving Tier 4 for special circumstances such as an emergency number of COVID cases, a new variant of the virus, or a complete breakdown in the country's healthcare system.
Of the 235 sites controlled by the CDC, about 115 are in the Level 3 category. To date, no country has been included in the Level 4 risk category "Very High".
Tier 3 includes a wide range of countries, including most of Europe, Canada, Mexico, and many locations in the Caribbean, South America, and Asia.
The CDC encourages Level 3 travelers in the US to be up to date with their vaccinations and boosters before traveling, but the agency warns that "even if you're up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations, you may still be at risk." contract and the spread of COVID-19.
Tier 3 wasn't the only category to change on Monday as the CDC moved seven destinations to the "moderate" risk Tier 2 category. Carriers were Ivory Coast (Ivory Coast), El Salvador, Eswatini, Gabon, Lesotho . , Mauritania and South Africa.
A Tier 2 country has reported between 50 and 100 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 population in the past 28 days.
In Eswatini, Lesotho and South Africa, the number of COVID cases has improved in recent days, dropping below 3, while in Gabon, Cote d'Ivoire, El Salvador and Mauritania, the number of COVID cases has worsened due to "low" risk. 1st level.
About 20 sites are currently Tier 2, including Fiji, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Poland and Zambia.
Liberia, which also saw changes on Monday, fell into the "low" Tier 1 risk category.
A Level 1 location has reported 49 or fewer COVID cases per 100,000 population in the last 28 days. Currently, about 35 countries fall into this category, including China, India, Philippines, Romania, Egypt and Indonesia.
Finally, the CDC reserves its "unknown" category for places with inaccurate reports of COVID cases. This week, the agency added Sri Lanka to the "unknown" category.
Other places in this category include Armenia, French Polynesia, Ghana, Iran, Maldives and Venezuela. To date, the category of "unknown" includes approximately 65 countries.
